A Fundamental Relation Between Supermassive Black Holes and Their Host Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
The masses of supermassive black holes correlate almost perfectly with the velocity dispersions of their host bulges, MBH ∝ σ α, where α ∼ 5. The relation is much tighter than the relation between MBH and bulge luminosity, with a scatter no larger than expected on the basis of measurement errors alone.

An Observed Fundamental Plane Relation for Supermassive Black Holes
We study observed correlations between supermassive black hole (BHs) and the properties of their host galaxies, and show that the observations define a BH “fundamental plane” (BHFP), of the form MBH ∝ σ3.0±0.3 R0.43±0.19 e or MBH ∝ M 0.54±0.17 ∗ σ 2.2±0.5, analogous to the FP of elliptical galaxies. The BHFP is preferred over a simple relation between MBH and any of σ, M∗, Mdyn, or Re alone at ...
متن کاملProbing the Coevolution of Supermassive Black Holes and Quasar Host Galaxies
At low redshift, there are fundamental correlations between the mass of supermassive black holes (MBH) and the mass (Mbulge) and luminosity of the host galaxy bulge. We investigate the same relation at z & 1. Using virial mass estimates for 15 quasars at z & 2 to measure their black hole mass, we find that black holes at high-z fall nearly on the same MBH versus R-band magnitude (MR) relation (...
متن کاملGalaxies and Black Holes
The idea that supermassive black holes are generic components of galactic nuclei has come to be widely accepted, due largely to the secure detection of 10 6 − 10 9.5 M⊙ dark objects at the centers of about a dozen galaxies. 1 The mean mass of these objects – of order 10 −2.5 times the mass of their host galaxies – is consistent with the mass in black holes needed to produce the observed energy ...
متن کاملA Unified Model for the Evolution of Galaxies and Quasars
We incorporate a simple scheme for the growth of supermassive black holes into semi-analytic models that follow the formation and evolution of galaxies in a cold dark matter dominated Universe. We assume that supermassive black holes are formed and fuelled during major mergers. If two galaxies of comparable mass merge, their central black holes coalesce and a few percent of the gas in the merge...
متن کاملA log-quadratic relation for predicting supermassive black hole masses from the host bulge Sérsic index
We reinvestigate the correlation between black hole mass and bulge concentration. With an increased galaxy sample (totalling 27), updated estimates of galaxy distances, black hole masses, and Sérsic indices n — a measure of concentration — we perform a least-squares regression analysis to obtain a relation suitable for the purpose of predicting black hole masses in other galaxies. In addition t...
